I know, I know. Everyone thinks I’m nuts because, on Facebook and if you’re on my mailing lists, you’ve been given an update with all my old stories. Believe it or not, I actually haven’t lost my mind.
No, no. Actually, I’m getting my Stories section all fixed up. I have NEVER made a good section for anyone to see any of my previous work, let alone allowed anyone to easily sample any of it. Heck, I’m going to be making a short-story and scribbles section, too. THEN I mean to update my “Cover & Design” section. I don’t know what’s been keeping me. I must be insane.
Anywhoo, everyone–now you know. I’ve completely updated my books section here: http://koreymaejohnson.com/category/koreys-books-stories/ if you’re curious as to what I’m blathering on about.
AND, if you’d like to try typing simply www.koreymaejohnson.com, you can do that whenever you’d like. It will lead you in.
Thanks for your patience, everyone!

Lex’s father used to get angry with how much she fidgeted. He said that angels just don’t get nervous and that she was exposing a weakness. That being said, her father had never been in the “hot seat” under Zahriel Monias. All she’d been for the last three years was in the hot seat, and it still didn’t feel comfortable. If she had her wings “out” she figured she’d even be molting.
Zahriel was a gorgeous man—dark features, stormy grey eyes, knock-out broad shoulders… She didn’t like those stormy grey eyes ever looking in her direction. She had a feeling he wasn’t going to ask her out for a cup of coffee anytime soon.
She was beginning to sweat, and she hadn’t even been invited into his office yet.
Death walked out of Zahriel’s office and closed the door behind him. Well, the Head Reaper, anyway, who happened to be Zahriel’s roommate and best friend, who was truly called Dathaniel. He was dressed in sunglasses and a long trench coat like someone who had watched ‘The Matrix’ about a hundred-too-many times. Dathaniel she hadn’t talked to very often at all, being so new to the job, but he was also could be called intimidating, if just because of how tall he was.
“Ah, so you’re Lex,” he said, pushing down his sunglasses. The sunglasses themselves were completely unnecessary in this office building with the back-to-the-future-airport theme going on. “I remember your father harassing me to look at your baby pictures, and now look at ya.” He waved his arm to motion to her. “You’ve made Zahriel do pushups.”
She blinked up at Dathaniel with confusion. “Zahriel’s doing pushups… because of me?”
“He’s trying to get himself into a state of zen before you come in there with your shitty work record. You’ve been working here only three years. How did you get written up so much already?”
“Oh, I’m super-talented,” she replied, and Death smiled back at her with white, shiny teeth. “What are you doing around the cupid-duty?”
Death grunted and sat down next to her in a heavy way, making it seem like he was so exhausted that he let himself fall backwards into the chair. “You shouldn’t call it the ‘cupid duty’. Your boss hates that. Cupid is a Greek myth that has nothing to do with what you do. It’s the Philos Division—it’s not like you go around wearing diapers and shooting people with little pink arrows.”
“Not unless I just came out of a rockin’ party,” she admitted with a grin.
Death frowned at her.
“I was joking,” she said with a shrug.
“Yeah, but that kind of joke is gonna mess up Zahriel’s zen. Don’t ruin this for him. He doesn’t want you to think he’s a bad guy,” he lectured frankly. “You’re still single, right?” he asked in an afterthought.
That was a strange question. She blinked and looked over at him. “Why, do you want to go out?”
He raised his eyebrows. “Would you if I asked?” he countered.
She thought about it, but not very seriously. Dathaniel was a good looking guy, but his job sucked and he had a very dark sense of humor. He also had a reputation for fucking anything that moved. “Nope,” she replied, crossing her legs.
“And why not?” Death asked, suddenly offended. “I’m very qualified.”
“Yes you are,” she replied, “At being a man-whore.”
“Hm,” he said thoughtfully, straightening. “Suddenly I don’t feel too bad for what you have coming to you.”
She wobbled one of her eyebrows at him immediately at these ominous words. “Why?” she demanded. “What do I have coming to me?”
He shrugged innocently. “Something you’re not gonna like very much.” He grinned. “Unless…” He chuckled to himself and then waved his hand. “No, you probably won’t like it at all. You’re not the type.”
“What type?” She could feel alarm settling in. “What are you talking about, Death?”
“Death is what I do, not who I am,” he corrected patiently, raising his finger as if to note the lesson. “Just like I don’t call you a manipulating little matchmaker.”
“It’s a little more complex than that,” she replied frankly, rolling her eyes. “There’s a reason why fate needs a specialist in this! It’s a tough job hooking some of these doofball humans up!”
“It must be,” Dathaniel replied with a snort. “Your record sucks. How is it you have the highest aptitude test scores and the lowest reliability rate?”
“My father asks me that all the time,” she responded smartly, but then frowned. She was getting more worried by the second. “Lay it out straight,” she begged, lolling her head in Dathaniel’s direction. “Am I gonna get canned?”
“Canned as in fired or as in like a pickle?” he replied unhelpfully.
She blinked at him, and he gave a laugh. “Nah, Zahriel isn’t gonna can you if he can help it,” he assured, and she exhaled a big breath of air as he added by way of explanation, “There’s a lot of paperwork that goes with firing someone.”
“Oh, good,” she said, swallowing.
At that moment, the door down at the other end of the room opened and Zahriel stepped out. “Lex. Thanks for being here on-time for once. Get in there and sit your ass down in that seat,” he said firmly, pointing into his office.
Lex looked over at Dathaniel, hoping for a little help by saying something like, ‘She’s just a kid, chill out. Take it easy on her!’ but instead he shrugged, said, “What?” and then pointed to the office. “Go on before you’re in deeper hot water than you are now.”
Her face blushed red and she stood up from her seat and walked carefully past Zahriel as if she was afraid he might try to bite her as he walked by.
“Having a nice chat out here?” she heard Zahriel ask Dathaniel as she carefully took her seat.
“Yeah. Contrary to popular opinion, I’m a nice guy!” Dathaniel said defensively.
Zahriel snorted and shut the door, closing her in that room alone with him. Even the air seemed dense… She was going to get her ass handed to her, she just knew it.
“Do you know what this is?” he asked, walking over to his desk and picking up a non-descript manila folder.
“I could guess,” she told him, already wincing.
“It’s your record,” he told her.
She nodded. “That was my guess.” She skirted the tiles on the floor with her eyes, trying to gain courage.
“If you’re embarrassed by it, that’s good. I, too, would be embarrassed by this if I was you,” he assured, picking up the folder and reading it over. “In three years, you have failed to show up for duty over a hundred times. When you do show up, you seem to show up late. Just about every day. Your reliability sucks. Your attitude to your supervisors is even worse. You’ve been passed around from supervisor to supervisor like a hot potato. We’ve been here, with me telling you that you need to do better, too many times. This,” he held up the folder, “just keeps getting fatter.” He threw the folder across the desk.
“That is a dilemma,” she admitted flatly, nodding. She didn’t know what else to say, although apparently agreeing with the fact that she was a screw-up was apparently being regarded as her being a wise-ass, if she judged her boss’s stern gaze well enough.
“Can I ask why you asked for my division and not something… that doesn’t depend on anyone?” he asked her.
“Well, I didn’t know myself very well three years ago,” she replied, fiddling with the arm of the chair. “I was easier in the academy. You know, with bells and wake-up calls…”
“So you need someone to hold your hand, keep you on track.” He smiled at her, and she nodded and smiled back.
“That would be great.”
“You’re a big girl now, Elexia!” he suddenly snapped, and she realized the smile was his casual way of making fun of the fact that she was a little on the immature side. “People depend on you. Human lives get affected by what we do by more than you know. Through generations.”
“I’m sorry,” she said, dropping her head. “I know I’m a screw up.”
“You’re not a screw-up, you’re a disobedient, lazy kid,” he said, swiping his hand through the air. His jaw was clenched tightly for awhile, and then as he watched her, his eyes softened. “What do you think I should do with you, Lex, that you would respond to?”
* * *
Zahriel pursed his lips as he considered Lex. She was a cute thing; she was smaller than most of the archers. She was young and, because she was stationed in college dorms, looked just like a human twenty-year old with her pink zip-up hoodie and the buns on either side of her head that resembled bear’s ears.
For the life of him, he didn’t quite understand his perversions—he’d wanted to fuck her brains out since the moment she showed up for duty. Most of the older angels he knew were at least a few centuries old, and they had that life-weary look behind their eyes. This younger generation didn’t have it; they were ready to live, to help, to be part of things.
Still, every unit had their kid who had slipped through the cracks, and Lex was definitely his problem. Her whole generation was pushed through an academy and she landed what was referred to (although he deplored the term) as ‘Cupid Detail’ in a party college in the middle of Wisconsin of all places. She was so busy taking in the scene that undoubtedly she couldn’t make her appointments because she was trying to keep up with her human friends, human classes, or was simply too hung-over to realize what time it was. He understood that anybody who grew up in the same house as the man who was her father—who was her boss’s boss’s boss—would relish a chance to stretch her wings for once, but play-time was over.
If she wanted to act like a kid, he was going to spank her like one, point-blank. She didn’t know this yet, and even he was still deciding if the discipline was a good idea. He hadn’t spanked a girl for centuries, but then… A girl hadn’t deserved it this much.
What was inconvenient was how his balls tightened uncomfortably when he imagined her bouncy little bottom squirming over his lap. This was going to be a lesson for him in self-control.
“Lex?” he asked the distracted girl who looked like a deep caught in a headlight.
She lifted her shoulders indecisively then continued to mindlessly pinch the leather in the office chair she was sitting on. The chair was far too big for her small frame; it practically swallowed her alive.
“Do you think you deserve disciplinary action?” he asked her, his words coming out in a pedantic drawl, trying to illicit some sort of response longer than two words.
“I will really do better next time,” she promised earnestly. He had heard this promise before—and it hadn’t gotten any better. The first year she worked in his unit, she would come into his office saying, ‘I’ll do better, I’ll do better!’ like it was a protection spell.
It must have worked, because he hadn’t spanked her yet and she apparently had no idea he was going to.
He had a feeling that when it became clear, it was going to really mess with his chances when he asked her out afterwards. He had been building up to it, and Dathaniel recently announced that it had grown to ‘sad proportions’ before also reminding him that he had yet to get laid in the 21st century. The Angel of Death was getting more booty than the Angel of Love.
Dathaniel was right—it was sad.
“I know you’ll do better next time, because I’m going to give you everything you need. I’m going to be your ball and chain. I’m going to be on your ass every minute of every day making sure that you become a responsible person to match that intellect of yours.” He heard his voice raising, but so was his temper. Damn it, he didn’t want to be the bad guy, and she was going to think of it that way for certain!
“Well, I don’t need… quite that level of attention,” she said nervously.
He took off his jacket and threw it over the back of his chair to begin rolling up his sleeves. “Yeah? Tough. You just got yourself a new best friend. We’re going to be spending a lot of time together, and when you do something I don’t like, I’m going to fry that little butt of yours until you can get up in the morning and do your job without it.”
She seemed extremely startled by his announcement and she sat straight as a pin at the edge of the chair. “Maybe you should just fire or reassign me…” she said, chewing her lip.
He snorted. “No way. Do you know how much paperwork that is?” She put her hand up to her eyes as if she realized she was in her own worse nightmare. “You know what your father told me when you first came to work for me?”
She didn’t answer verbally, just shook her head.
“He told me three years ago that the only way you’ll do what you’re told is with a sore bottom.” Her eyes wiped up and her face turned a deep crimson. “I thought he was just being funny. Would have been the first joke he ever made, but I really thought that’s what it was. Or at least an exaggeration, but I can now see that he giving me good advice.”
She stood up. “Woah, woah!” she snapped, her brows drawing together. “First of all, you can’t spank me because I’m an adult. Secondly, you can’t spank me because I’m your employee! Third of all—is violence really the way to solve anything?”
“Yes, actually,” he replied firmly, reaching for his belt. “But I don’t think of this as violence, Lex. Besides, we’ve just been through this; you’re apparently not ready to be given adult responsibilities, and as for you being my employee—your father is the boss of my boss, and he gave the all-clear on this one.” He pulled his belt through the loops, and he could feel her eyes on his hands.
He crooked his finger at her. “Come here and bend over the desk,” he ordered.
She shifted her weight from foot to foot, then laughed nervously, and then—which he didn’t expect—jumped over the back of the chair and bounded to the door in two strides.
Her cursed and tried to chase after her, but he only got to the doorway before he was stopped by Dathaniel, who had the struggling girl tipped over one of his shoulders, screeching, “Let me go, you giant praying mantis!” as she hit her fists against his back.
Dathaniel grinned casually at him. “Lost something?” he asked mischievously. Dathaniel had known that Zahriel had planned to spank the girl. He also, unfortunately, knew that Zahriel was interested in her. ‘She’s single by the way,’ he mouthed. ‘You’re welcome.’
Zahriel rolled his eyes and snapped his fingers at the ground. “I don’t need you to play rebound,” he told him.
Dathaniel dropped the girl onto the ground and Zahriel put a firm grip on her upper arm. “You’re calm, right?” Dathaniel asked, concerned.
It’s possible that Zahriel used to have anger issues, but he was still completely fine since he worn himself out with pushups. Exercise always helped. “I’m fine, Dathaniel. Thanks for asking.” He shoved Dathaniel out of the room before Dathaniel did something stupid, like stayed to watch.
“Fine, I can see where I’m not wanted,” Dathaniel huffed. “It’s not fair that most of my employees have dicks, that’s all I’m saying. Friends let friends live vicariously through—”
Zahriel shut the door and turned to Lex. “He knows you were going to spank me!” she charged angrily.
“Of course he does, and you should kiss his feet because he talked me out of using a good birch on your ridiculous little hide,” he gritted, grabbing her hand and pulling her to his armless office chair. “Which I’m now regretting. What was your end-game? To have me chase you?”
She fought against him, trying to make herself harder to drag by digging her heels into the floor. “Of course not—I was attempting to quit! Can I quit?”
He rolled his eyes and sat down, pulling her over his lap with a single, firm yank. “What do you think you are, a human? You’re an angel on-duty. There’s no quitting!” He put his belt on the ground, trying to get a handle on the violent squirming of the girl.
She pulled her hands behind her bottom to cover her skirt. “Please, don’t, Zahriel! Please—anything else!”
“We’ve been doing everything else for the last three years. I would like you to come to my office for once and not be in trouble! I don’t want to stand here and yell at you for an hour every day!” he snapped at her, pinning her hands behind her back.
Even in this pinned state, she continued to kick her legs and try to crawl over his lap like a worm. He remembered that, when given spanking in the distant past, he didn’t have to pin them down like this. Back in the day, when he gave an order, it was actually obeyed. The recruit would just bend over the desk and stay in place throughout the punishment.
This was new, and this was also rubbing against his already very fixated crotch.
He pressed her down to his thigh and flipped up her skirt, that normally stopped at mid-thigh, but now exposed a work of art when raised. Her bubbly little bottom was delicious looking.
“Stop! Stop! Over the skirt!” she demanded angrily.
“Shush,” he told her and slapped his palm down over the white-cotton covered bottom. Man-oh-man, did he like the way her bottom reacted. He liked the way her bottom wiggled, her liked the sound of his hand, he liked the soft feel of her flesh, he liked it all. He even liked the way Lex squeaked miserably in response, but he wasn’t sure why he liked it so much. Perhaps he just liked the sound of something getting through to her.
“Zahriel! Please, please! This is unfair!” she cried after giving up her squeaks after the third satisfying ‘smack’. She whimpered the words, “This is unfair…” a second time when he ignored it and continued to slap on.
She was actually beginning to make some leeway in her escape from all her squirming. He licked his leg out, let her legs fall between his two knees, and then pinned them with his thigh, securing her and readjusting her.
“I’m gonna bite you!” she warned in response. It must have suddenly occurred to her that attempting escape was futile now, and she could squirm all she wanted with absolutely no avail.
“Go ahead and see what happens!” he replied, followed by a volley of spanks. Her certainly didn’t expect her to take him up on his threat, but once her bottom reached a certain shade of pink, he felt teeth.
“Ouch! For fuck’s sake, what’s the matter with you?” he barked at her, feeling his blood pressure rise and heat rising to his face. Luckily, she didn’t bite him with her full strength—she didn’t break his skin, at least, but the pinch her bite gave him was a wake-up call that only angered him. He reached for the belt he had set by his feet.
“Don’t get angry, I warned you!” she said, digging her fingers into his pant leg. “I have limits!”
“Well, so do I, and I’m at mine,” he growled, and pulled down the last bit of covering she had. He hadn’t gotten a good look at her bottom before he raised the folded belt up and brought it down with a ‘whoosh’.
He didn’t really pay attention, in fact, until he was a few strokes in and she was screaming and crying at the same time. Her bottom was everything he’d imagined and more, although the belt strokes were already swelling across her flanks.
She was going to have trouble sitting down for awhile when they were through, that was for certain. “I can guarantee you that you will never be written up again, you will be respectful, you will do your duty, you will show up on time,” he ordered loud enough to be heard over her hiccupping cries, “because if you don’t, you will find yourself in this position. Not every now and then, but every damn time, Elexia! You understand me?” he slapped the belt down across her upper thighs, causing her to both cry and hiss. “Lex? Do you understand what happens?”
“Yes!” she cried.
“And what happens?” he asked after another pronounced couple of swipes.
“Spanking!” she sobbed; her voice quaking with humiliation.
Her bottom was about as red as he had expected to get it to, and so he stopped and let go of her hands. He expected her to scramble off his lap, and figured at that point he’d haul her into a corner with her bottom on display, but as she just kept still except for the crying, he realized that she didn’t need the extra embarrassment. She sounded quite sorry for herself as it was. Besides, there would always be a later time.
He pulled her off of his knees slowly, shushing her. As soon as she was on her feet, she pulled up her panties and let her skirt fall back into place, averting her glassy eyes to the floor. “I’ll do better,” she rasped miserably.
He put his fingers under her chin. Even tear-stained, her face was so pretty. “This isn’t about doing better, it’s about doing your best,” he replied.
She nodded. “Yes, Sir.”
He smiled as kindly as possible, came close to saying something like, ‘So, would you like me to take you out to dinner tonight?” but instead grimaced with hesitation. Eventually he spoke, but all that came out was, “You have your assignments for tomorrow, then… I’ll give you a call afterwards to see how they went.” He even opened the office door to let her out.
“Okay,” she said awkwardly, and shuffled to the door. She glanced back at him, and he gave a wobbly smile. Her own expression seemed hurt and confused… like a cat who just had its tail stepped on. “Bye,” she finally said.
Dathaniel was still in the hallway, reading a magazine, and looked over his magazine to see her shuffling out. Dathaniel frowned, stood up from his chair, and then walked into the office and whispered as they watched her walk down the long hallway towards the elevator and stepped on, “So… Did you ask her out?”
“How’s that supposed to go?” Zahriel groaned. “Hey, I know I just spanked you like a child, but I do you want to go to the Bruce Springsteen concert with me when he comes into town next week? Give me a break.” He rolled his eyes.
Dathaniel pushed his lips out thoughtfully, as if that wasn’t an aweful idea. “I’d say yes.” When Zahriel moved to push Dathaniel out of his office again, he dug his boots in and said, “C’mon, man. She might to her job better if you give her some lovin’ inspiration. Think of it like a classroom assignment.”
“No,” Zahriel groaned.
“You’ll never get with her if you don’t ask her,” he reminded. “Grow some balls!” He crossed his arms. “So, how’d it go?”
“It was torture,” he replied honestly. “She’s… gorgeous.” He brushed his fingers through his short hair. “But it’s probably for the best… I am her boss, and… and I’m way older, so…”
When the elevator dinged at the end of the hallway, they both jerked their heads in the direction of the door and saw Lex stepping awkwardly towards the room. “I think I dropped my cellphone,” she peeped.
Zahriel looked around the chair he was spanking her at, and low and behold, saw a cellphone there. He picked it up, showed it to her, and then put it in her hand.
There was another one of those moments—a thick one where he could tell she expected him to say something. “Here you go,” he told her.
She smirked uneasily and then murmured thanks, and turned to walk back away.
Dathaniel looked over just to give him a ‘Well, ask her out!’ looks.
Zahriel sighed and shoved his hands in his pocket and turned to watch her walk away. Again.
“Would you like to go out sometime?” Dathaniel suddenly called out to ask her in a voice that wasn’t his own. It was a dead-on impression of Zahriel complete with his scratchy, lower voice. Dathaniel’s impression could have fooled his own mother!
Still, it was unexpected and put him in quite a bind. Zahriel’s eyes widened as Lex spun around, her brow crimped with confusion. “You’re asking me out… now? After that?” she demanded.
“Well… Yes. I’ve never been very good with timing, apparently. Besides, knowing you… I might never have a better time to ask.” Hell, he might have to spank her every day for quite awhile if she didn’t learn to develop a work ethic… That was an exciting concept.
She raised her eyebrow. “Most people date for quite awhile before they see what you’ve seen,” she reminded.
He swallowed, just remembering what that skirt was hiding! “Yes. And asking you out might be extremely inappropriate and against every rule of propriety.”
“Well… I suppose that’s why I’ll let you take me out.” She gave a smirk, and his heart was booming around in his chest.
“Really?” he asked, incredulous.
She shrugged. “Well, I’m hoping you’ll think I’m so cute you’ll give me some leeway. I plan to use this to my advantage,” she admitted with a flat, yet strangely playful, tone.
“I already think you’re cute enough for leeway. Why do you think it’s taken me three years to get to this point? I found reason in the first week,” he replied.
She bit her lip and blushed. “Well, I’ll have to up my game, I guess.” She glanced at Dathaniel and added, “Leave him at home this time.”
“You got it. I’ll call you?” Zahriel said, already picking back up his confidence.
She nodded, then turned and walked away.
Dathaniel laughed when she disappeared back onto the elevator. “Anybody tell you Bros before Hos?” he teased.
“I could kill you for pulling that.”
“Kill me? Hell, I expect you to do the dishes when you get home, and for the next month. You’re welcome. But remember, if you leave me at home, you’ll have to pull up the big-boy pants all on your own. I’m always ready to help with the spankings, though. Maybe I can watch sometime.”
“Don’t make me hit you,” Zahriel groaned.
“Fine, fine,” Dathaniel laughed, waving his hand. “I’m signing off of cupid-duty for the day, then. You’re on your own.”
“Well, actually…” Zahriel said, feeling oddly thankful to his friend. “I’m not.”
